Chaos and traffic jams have become routine at the Dahisar toll plaza as motorists, under the impression that they don’t have to pay, try to zip past the point and booth staffers hurriedly “throw in barricades to stop them”. Some car owners have alleged that their vehicles get damaged upon impact with the barricades.
This problem, which began some months ago after local BJP, MNS and Congress leaders requested motorists to not pay toll, has aggravated in the past month. Those who live in the Mira-Bhayander region were advised by these leaders to pass through the toll booth by simply waving their hands. The Mira-Bhayander units of the BJP and MNS have also protested against the toll collection.
While they have been demanding abolition of toll in Mumbai, the state government has not taken any decision on the issue.
The state exempted light vehicles from paying toll at 53 toll booths across the state from May 31. The exemption, though, does not include the five entry and exit points of Mumbai at Dahisar, Vashi, Airoli, Mulund and L B S Marg.
When contacted, Mumbai Entry Points Ltd (MEPL) chairperson Jayant Mhaiskar said all vehicles have to pay toll at the city’s entry and exit points.
Most vehicles with political stickers, though, are allowed to pass if they refuse to pay toll, said a motorist.
“The toll rule is not clear. Some people are seen zooming past the booth without paying while some are stopped by security guards at the toll point,” said a motorist who drives daily from Mumbai to Vasai.
The confusion has led to massive traffic jams at Dahisar during peak hours. Motorists say arguments and exchange of words over payment results in pile-up vehicles.
