MUMBAI: After a few days of temperatures staying on the higher side, there was some respite for the city on Wednesday as minimum temperatures went closer to normal.IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 16.4 degrees Celsius, down from 18 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Wednesday’s minimum temperature was 1.9 degrees below normal.
Colaba recorded a minimum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees above normal. Colaba’s minimum temperature on Tuesday was 22.4 degrees Celsius.
However, the pollution levels in the city breached the ‘poor’ category. Owing to the lower temperatures, the pollution levels in the city worsened, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) entered the poor category. While System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Mumbai, recorded an AQI of 171 on Tuesday, the level shot up to 220 on Wednesday. An AQI between 200 and 300 is considered “poor”. Among the 10 locations monitored by SAFAR, Bandra Kurla Complex was the most polluted with an AQI of 330 and Bhandup was the least polluted with an AQI of 153. Apart from BKC, Navi Mumbai too recorded an AQI in the very poor category.
Maximum temperatures at both Santacruz and Colaba were higher as compared to the previous day. The maximum temperature at Santacruz was 34.4 degree Celsius, which is 2.2 degrees above normal and the that at Colaba was 34.7 degree Celsius, which is 2.8 degrees above normal.
