RTI activist injured in hit-and-run, says he was targeted

A right to information activist, who has taken a stand against several illegal activities in Navi Mumbai, was injured in a hit-and-run accident on Palm Beach Road on Wednesday. Anarjit Chauhan (46), who was riding his bike, said a car rammed into the rear of his two-wheeler and sped past.

In his police statement, Chauhan has expressed suspicion that the accident was “planned” by someone who was targeting him. What has fuelled this doubt is that there was hardly any traffic at the time, said Chavan. “I was in the extreme left lane. So, it’s a bit surprising that the car driver hit my bike. He did not even stop after that,” he said.

“Around 3.30pm, a golden Honda City suddenly hit my bike,” said Chavan.

He was flung off the bike and sustained injuries to the chest, head and arms. The driver of a passing vehicle took him to a hospital.

A criminal offence has been registered at Sanpada police station against the unidentified driver of the car, said an official.

Chauhan said that a man recently threatened him openly for having taking a stand against an “illegal” structure that has come up close to a mangrove patch.

“I’ve made several enemies due to my activism. But such threats cannot cower me from taking up cudgels in public interest,” said Chauhan

His wife, Arati, said that doctors at the municipal hospital in Vashi said there could be some internal injury,” she said.
