Over 2,500 eateries inspected, 2,133 found flouting rules

As part of its massive drive against eateries infringing upon their licence conditions BMC till date has inspected 2,596 hotels all over Mumbai and seized 1,936 cylinders.

The city has a total of 350 Grade 2 eateries and 3880 Grade3 eateries as per civic records. Of the eateries inspected violations were found in 2,133 eateries.

The maximum violations were found in eateries located in R-South ward including Kandivli and Charkop. Out of the 157 eateries inspected in this area, violations were found in 150. In all 150 unauthorized cylinders were seized in this ward. The H-west ward, which consists of areas like Bandra, Khar and Santacruz, also saw a major crack down. Of the 145 eateries inspected in this ward, 110 were found having violations. In all 24 unauthorized cylinders were seized from this ward.

The civic body has begun the inspection drive following the fire at Hotel City Kinara in Kurla on October 16, which killed eight persons including seven students of Don Bosco institute.

Meanwhile the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) in a letter to the BMC commissioner has complained that the BMC is only taking action against shop encroachment but conveniently ignoring action on hawkers.

“In many areas we have received complaints that shops which have put steps outside their premises as the foot path might be dug up. Such shops to be looked at sympathetically,” said Viren Shah, the president of the association.
