With rains playing truant in catchment areas, BJP MLA Ameet Satam has written a letter to the BMC commissioner asking him to evaluate the option of setting up a desalination plant for the city.
The civic body recently imposed a 20% water cut for domestic users of Mumbai and 50% for bulk users looking at the significantly less quantum of water in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai especially when compared to the last few years.
Satam, who is a corporator in the civic body as well said that to protect our city from this erratic nature of monsoon in future where it’s becoming increasingly tough to predict monsoon such options need to be evaluated.
“Such experiments have been successfully done in Chennai before and even the deserts of Middle East have found a long term solution in this technology with those countries no longer depending on rains for their water needs. This experiment has been contemplated before by MCGM however there was no direction to it this leading it to get tangled in bureaucratic hassles,” said Satam in his letter.
