Mercedes driver who knocked down cops held

Mumbai:: Nearly 10 days after a speeding Mercedes knocked down two constables near the Mantralaya junction, injuring them severely, the driver, Vishal Naik, was picked up from his hometown in Pali district of Rajasthan on Wednesday.

Constables Nitin Chavan (32) and Ramchandra Lokhande (48) suffered multiple fractures after their bike was hit by the Mercedes on December 19 night. The car was later found on a roadside.

Police said Naik had taken out the car when its owner, Peddar Road businessman Karan Gupta, was away in the US. Naik’s two friends were in the car at the time of the accident. An officer said Naik used to operate a horse cart a few years ago and later obtained a driving licence.

Zonal DCP Manoj Kumar Sharma confirmed his detention. “Naik used to live on the pavement. When we reached the spot, he was missing. The police traced his cellphone location to Gujarat and later his hometown in Rajasthan,” an officer said.
