Residents of Mira-Bhayander will have to go without water for over 60 hours at a stretch every week from 9am on Wednesday to Friday midnight and water pressure for the remaining days will be reduced.
The decision has been taken due to the depleting water levels in Ulhas river in Badlapur that supplies water to the area. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which supplies 50 MLD water daily to the region, will not do so on Thursday and Friday till further notice.
Another 86 MLD comes from the Shahad Temghar Water Authority (STEM), a consortium of three municipal corporations of Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur and Mira-Bhayander. STEM has decided to cut water supply every Wednesday till further notice.
Both MIDC and STEM have informed the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation about the water cut. The region has been receiving water every 36 to 44 hours. Civic officials said the water cut is likely to be imposed till July 15, 2016.
