5-yr-old falls in open septic tank, drowns

A five-year-old boy died after falling into an open septic tank in Ulhasnagar on Saturday afternoon. The boy, Tanesh Jagdand who was the only child, was playing with his friends when he slipped in.

Angry residents of Shanti Nagar blamed the contractor, Gajanan Bhamankar, who is a Shiv Sena leader, for having left the tank open.

Soon after Tanesh slipped in, his friends alerted a few bystanders, but it was too late by the time they reached. He had drowned by then, said residents.

Local resident Sujit Jaiswar said that, for almost a year, they had been asking the contractor to finish work on the septic tank. “His negligence is to blame for the boy’s death,” said Jaiswar.

An accidental death report has been registered at Central police station. “A case will be registered against the contractor if his guilt is established in our probe,” said a police official.

Tanesh’s father, Vijay, demanded that the police arrest the contractor whose negligence caused his son’s death.
