Heavy rain lashes Mumbai, 3 electrocuted in Thane district

Heavy rain lashed several parts of the city on Sunday evening. There were continuous showers in areas like Ghatkopar and Kurla in the suburbs and Dadar and Matunga in the island city. In the western suburbs, areas like Andheri received rainfall. Kalyan and Thane also witnessed heavy rain.

The rainfall recorded on Sunday between 8.30am-8.30pm by IMD Colaba observatory was 0.2mm and Santacruz was 2.6mm.

Three people were electrocuted after a live overhead wire fell on them at Chande village in Shahapur taluka of Thane district. The victims were identified as Kanhibai Dhupari (45), her son Manoj (5) and Namdev Gangad (35). Police have registered an accidental death report.

At the MMRDA grounds in BKC where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event was held, some journalists who had come to cover the event were stranded for a few minutes. Several took shelter under a tarpaulin sheet, which also flew off due to gusty winds, which accompanied the rains.

Ghatkopar resident Pravin Shah said, “While we expect the October heat to cause discomfort, these showers are welcome.”

The IMD Mumbai on Friday night had forecast that light rain or thundershowers may occur over the weekend. This was on account of a depression over east central Arabian sea moving northwards. “On Sunday morning, the deep depression over east-central Arabian Sea weakened into a depression at 8.30am. This caused rains in Mumbai,” said a weather official.
