List action plan against illegal shrines, Bombay high court tells Maharashtra governmen

Prepare a time-bound programme on taking action against illegal religious structures within a week, the Bombay high court directed the state government on Thursday.

The HC also asked the state to ensure implementation of a May 2011 GR , which specifically provided for demolishing of illegal shrines built after the SC’s 2009 order.

Before a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka, government pleader D A Nalawade sought time to inform of the steps taken so far. But the bench said from the minutes of a meeting with the chief secretary and replies filed so far, the state has done nothing. “If you don’t want to implement the GR, tell us,” said Justice Oka. BMC’s advocate Anil Sakhare said they have identified illegal shrines and forwarded the list to a civic panel for action.
