Thunder and showers hit city third day in a row

While maximum temperature in Santacruz on Monday touched 34.3 degrees Celsius, by evening, thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds hit the city. Weathermen said that these were typical monsoon withdrawal symptoms.

The interiors of Maharashtra, including Ahmednagar and Solapur, have been receiving good rainfall for the past few days.

On Monday, Colaba received 3.3mm rainfall between 5.30pm and 8.30pm, and Santacruz 4mm. The weather department had forecast light shower/thundershowers for the day. However, maximum temperatures were high during the day—Colaba 31.8 degrees C and Santacruz 34.3 degrees C. The maximum temperature in Colaba was 0.2 degrees C above normal and in Santacruz 2.3 degrees C above normal. The minimum temperatures in Colaba and Santacruz were 25 degrees C and 24.6 degrees C respectively. The relative humidity at Colaba was 84% and at Santacruz 76%.

The last two days of rainfall have benefited the catchment areas of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai. The total quantum of water in the lakes was 11.62 lakh million litres on Monday. On the same day last year, the water quantum was 13.93 lakh million litres. The rainfall received between October 4 and 5 in Middle Vaitarna was 35.50mm, Bhatsa 7mm, Vihar 2mm, Tansa 37mm and Modak Sagar 23mm.

The BMC received treefall complaints from Colaba, CST and Bandra due to gusty winds. No one was hurt in these incidents.
