Jeweller poisons self, wife & kids over Rs 51 lakh loans

Upset over persistent financial problems, a jeweller in Kandivli on Thursday tried to kill his wife, two daughters before he attempted to end his life as well.

Harish Soni (38) offered a beverage laced with poison to his family before consuming it himself. He later phoned a friend and told him about it after which the latter who informed Soni’s parents.

Soni lived with his 35-year-old wife and school-going daughters (aged 7 and 9 years) at Sector 2 in Charkop. The police officials said Soni had borrowed Rs 50 lakh for his business but suffered losses. His creditors had asked him to repay the money but he was unable to do so.

Soni bought a bottle of poison. He sat down with his wife and daughters and explained about his financial problems. He told them that as long as the family lived, creditors would hound them for money. One of Soni’s daughters later told the police, in her statement, that her father had mentioned the possibility of them being assaulted for not repaying.

Soni, his wife and daughters have been admitted to the ICCU. Their condition is critical. The police have registered a case of attempt to commit murder and causing hurt by poison against Soni. He might be picked up once he is discharged from the hospital. No suicide note was recovered from the house.
