A chain-snatcher, who had stolen jewellery worth over Rs 1 lakh from railway commuters, was arrested from Nalasopara by the GRP on Thursday. The 31-year-old accused was nabbed on the basis of specific information.
On March 27, he is alleged to have snatched a 10gm gold chain worth Rs 48,000, from a 50-year-old commuter boarding a train at Virar station. The complainant was boarding a slow train on platform 1 when the accused targetted him and fled with the chain.
On July 13, the accused allegedly made off with a 20gm gold mangalsutra worth Rs 52,000, from a woman who was returning to her seat in the ladies compartment of the Valsad Passenger when the train had halted at Malad station’s platform number 5.
The woman was returning to her seat from the washroom when the accused snatched her mangalsutra in the ladies compartment and fled. The GRP have booked the accused on charges of robbery.
