Residents hold silent protest over destruction of SGNP forest

Aghast at the destruction of forest cover at Sanjay Gandhi National Park and its adjoining areas, resident of Dahisar held a silent protest outside the park gate on Saturday.

In a memorandum submitted to the park authorities, the residents have alleged that authorities refuse to take action against violators despite repeated written complaints. The residents raised the following issues in their memorandum:

1) Killing of monkeys, wild boars, crocodiles, etc. Despite media highlighting this issue no proper complaint has been filed by you against the offenders with the police station. No proper panchanama or post mortem being done.

2) Illegal dumping of debris at Filterpada at Aarey Milk Colony. Owner of the truck not arrested despite the fact that the truck was seized while dumping the debris within SGNP.

3) All illegal as well as legal RMC Plants surrounding the boundary of SGNP which have damaged the forest cover of SGNP, no action/objection taken by park authorities you over the years due to which the thick forest cover prevailing in the years prior to 2009 has vanished in the year 2015.

4) Quarrying activities surrounding the boundary of SGNP as well as within SGNP which have ill effects on the animals due to sound pollution carried out due to blasting of rocks and heavy crushing of stones and transportation within SGNP. No action taken till date.

5) Illegal cutting of forest trees using the same challan and transporting wooden logs far in excess of the legal challan. This activities are going unchecked by park authorities.

6) Illegal distillation of liquor inside SGNP. This activity has been reported by media many a times in past. But no one punished so far.
