Prized catch: 700 kg onions, worth Rs 56,000, stolen in Mumbai

As onion prices hit the roof, 700 kg of onions were stolen by unidentified people at Pratiksha Nagar in Sion during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

According to the Wadala TT police station, a complaint has been registered by Anand Naik, 55, a vegetable vendor, who has a makeshift shop on a footpath in the area.

“Naik covered his stock of onions at around 9.30pm on Friday and left for home. When he returned on Saturday morning, 700 kg of onions kept in 14 sacks were stolen,” said Suhas Garud, senior inspector, Wadala TT police station.

The stolen onions are worth Rs 56,000 at current retail prices. The police suspect other vegetables vendors in the area may have been involved in the theft. “We are questioning a few vegetable vendors in the area on suspicion,” said Garud.
