Alleged distribution of iPads by Essar group brought to SC notice

NEW DELHI: NGO ‘Centre for Public Interest Litigation’, which sought a court-monitored probe into alleged nexus of Essar group with politicians, bureaucrats and journalists, on Monday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court claiming that the company had allegedly supplied iPads to them.

CPIL placed before the court leaked email messages of the company which purportedly showed that 195 people were given iPads in 2010 out of which 21 seemed to have returned them.

“It is not clear whether all those mentioned in the list were actually given the iPads or whether they accepted it. But it is clear that Essar attempted to give an expensive gift item to various politicians, ministers, bureaucrats who might have had or actually had official dealings with Essar by virtue of the position held by them,” the affidavit said.

The court had earlier issued notice to the Centre and the Essar group on the petition seeking an SIT probe into the controversy arising out of the leaked emails.
