MUMBAI: From the coming academic session, Mumbai University students will have to shell out at least 50-100% more money as examination fees owing to the increase in the remuneration of the examiners.
Currently, undergraduate students pay around Rs 500 as examination fee, which has been increased to Rs 1,000 from the coming session. For postgraduate students, the exam fee has gone up from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.
In the recent senate meeting for clearing the university’s budget, the authorities announced a hike in the remuneration paid to teachers for assessment work. It includes the honorarium amount paid to the teachers for assessing the papers, moderating it and even for conducting the viva. “Their honorarium was not hiked by the university for more than five years. In some cases, the money has been increased from Rs 10 per paper to Rs 50-60 per paper,” said a university official. However, some of the principals claim that the university will also have to invest in the infrastructure for the onscreen assessment process that will commence from this year, for which they are charging students.
Students’ organizations have opposed the fee hike.
