1. In a post on Facebook today, Lady Shri Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur said she has had enough of the controversy surrounding her social media post condemning last week’s “violence by ABVP”. Gurmehar had posted a photo on FB with a placard reading: “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP.”
2. Following that, some people unearthed Gurmehar’s old pro-peace posts – from last year – in which she said, “Pakistan did not kill my father. The war did.” She was referring to her father who was martyred during the Kargil war. These old posts were circulated widely and she received death threats, she said.
3. An FIR was registered today against unknown persons in connection with the “rape threats” allegedly by ABVP members.
4. The Congress party including Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra, came out vociferously in support of Gurmehar, a day after BJP Union minister Kiren Rijiju criticized her saying her mind had been “polluted””. “I am with you and all those people who stand for their rights & freedom of speech. The nation is proud of you for standing your ground & fighting fascist forces,” Vadra said. “Against the tyranny of fear we stand with our students,” echoed Rajiv Gandhi.
5. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal also slammed the BJP and the ABVP. He met with the Lieutenant Governor to discuss the”goondaism and the rape threats.”
