‘Neighbourly engagement’: Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi meets PM Modi

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday.

“A morning for neighbourly engagement. Chinese FM Wang Yi calls on Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” foreign ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup posted on Twitter.

India and China held delegation-level talks later in the day.

Wang met Goa chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Friday to review the logistics and security arrangements for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposed visit in October to the coastal state for the BRICS summit. He is on a three-day visit to India.

A China-led opposition earlier this year India’s entry to the NSG, which aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Beijing’s contention was that India was not a signatory of a key nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

But stressing that India and China are partners not rivals, a commentary by state-run Xinhua news agency said on Friday that “as Beijing and New Delhi head into a season of intensive top-level diplomatic encounters that could well define the future of their partnership, the two need to work together to keep their disagreements in check”
