Delhi Police on Thursday arrested the tempo driver who mowed down a 35-year-old man in west Delhi’s Subhash Nagar.

“Based on the CCTV footage from the accident site, the accused identified as the driver of the tempo delivery van, Rajesh, has been nabbed,” said a senior police officer.

Earlier, the police had identified the vehicle through its telltale signs as were seen in the CCTV footage and reached to its driver Rajesh who lived at Mahavir Nagar in Uttam Nagar area. The accused was absconding and manhunt was launched to nab him.

The deceased, identified as Matibool, drove an e-rickshaw during the day and worked as security guard at night in Subhash Nagar.

CCTV footage showed that a rickshaw-puller, in fact, stopped near the bleeding Matibool and made away with his mobile phone that was lying nearby.

The accident took place around 5:30am on Wednesday but was reported only around 7am. A police team reached the spot and rushed Matibool to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead, stating that he had died due to excessive bleeding.

Police later found some documents in Matibool’s pocket that helped in ascertaining his identity.

Matibool was hit by a tempo from behind while on his way home, the officer said.

“The tempo driver got off his vehicle immediately to take a look at the injured man. But instead of taking him to a hospital, he got back into his tempo and drove away.”

Most people who might have seen Matibool on the road may have ignored him for a drunk, the officer added.
