At least four people were killed and 15 others injured on Tuesday morning in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district as security forces opened fire on protesters.
Another youth succumbed to his injuries in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said, taking the death toll to 65 in the violence that erupted in the valley after Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani was killed in July.
The incident in Budgam occurred at Aripanthan area of Beerwah in the district when a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) came under attack by protesters forcing them to open fire, the police control room in Budgam said.
In the Anantnag incident, the youth died from a bullet injury sustained when forces fired on protesters during a protest in Dialgam area, Dr. Fazil Kochak, chief medical officer Anantnag district, informed HT.
He added 16 more people are injured.
The valley has been extremely tense after two people died on Monday and a 10-year-old was critically injured after being hit by a tear gas shell in Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Sixteen-year-old Yasir Sheikh from Batmaloo area in Srinagar was killed when forces opened fire on protesters in the area on Monday. Medical superintendent of Srinagar’s SMHS hospital, Dr Nazir Choudhary, told Hindustan Times that the Class 10 student was brought to the hospital with a bullet injury.
Riyaz Ahmad,18, from Tangmarg also succumbed to injuries sustained during a clash last week at Srinagar’s SKIMS hospital in the morning.
Batamaloo remained extremely tense on Monday evening as Sheikh’s body was brought back to his home.
As the country celebrated its 70th Independence Day on Monday, a CRPF commandant and two militants were killed in a gunfight near a famous Sufi shrine in downtown Srinagar. Nine security personnel were also wounded, three of them critically, and were shifted to AIIMS hospital in Delhi.
The CRPF said in a statement that its troops came under fire and grenade attack at four places in Srinagar – at Nowhatta Chowk, Gojwara Chowk, Bata Gali and Khaniyar Chowk.
Separately, the Indian Army said five militants were gunned down while trying to sneak into India from Pakistan. The infiltration bid was made along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector in northern Kashmir.
Kashmir has been under curfew after Wani’s death on July 8 triggered a wave of protests.
