Trans Fat Free India by 2022 – Government to roll out new rules by end of the month

Indian Government plans to make the country Trans Fat free. The incidences of deaths due to Coronary Heart Disease in India is as high as 72,000 people annually which can be directly related to consumption of high levels of Trans Fatty Acids (TFA).

Regulations for limiting TFA or Trans Fats in food items are likely to be rolled out by the end of the month to lessen the heart ailment rates, the Print reported.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will mandatorily limit the trans fat content in food items and oils to almost 3% by 2021 and 2% by 2022 against the current limit of 5%.

“The industry has to be a little more innovative and pull up its socks to find ways on how to reduce trans fats from food items,”
Arun Singhal, CEO, FSSAI told ThePrint.

Are Trans Fat Harmful?

  • Trans fats raisebad Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.
  • High LDL along with low HDL levels can cause cholesterol to build up in blood vessels, increasing the risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • Your body does not need or benefit from trans fats. Eating these fats increase your risk for health problems.
  • Cholesterol can build up in the arteries increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • It may also increase your risk for type 2 diabetes as weigh gain is a common symptom of eating excess trans fatty food.

Thus, in order to reduce the fatality rate by heart diseases, even the Union Minister of Health Harsh Vardhan stating the Centre is on its way to make India “trans-fat free” by 2022.
