Bollywood Actor Sonu Sood has been conferred with the prestigious SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in a virtual ceremony on September 29.
Sonu Sood has emerged as the ‘Messiah of the migrant workers’ during the Covid-19 lockdown in India and has won millions of hearts worldwide.
In the last few months, Sood has worked tirelessly sending lakhs of migrant workers and others back home amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, Sood has also provided free education, medical help to young students and created employment opportunities for the needy during these trying times.
“This is a rare honour. A UN recognition is very special. I have done whatever little I have done, in my own humble way, for my fellow countrymen without any expectations. However, to be recognized and awarded feels good. I fully support the UNDP in its endeavours to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Planet Earth and mankind will greatly benefit from the implementation of these goals”, said Sonu Sood, on receiving this coveted honour.
Other celebrities to have been similarly honoured by different Un bodies include names such as Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Watson, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchett, Antonio Banderas, Nicole Kidman and Priyanka Chopra.
