In the list of the Asia-Pacific countries, India was ranked second which faced the most CYBERATTACKS in the year 2020. A new report by the IBM Security X-Force revealed the information. India has faced 7% of all attacks among the Asian countries in the previous year with Japan leading the list.

As per the 2021 X-Force Threat Intelligence Index, finance and insurance was the most affected sector in India as it faced 60 per cent of the attacks. The report also said that in 2020, most of the attacks on companies in India were observed from May to July period. Ransomware is the topmost cyber-attack threat comprising 23 per cent of the attacks.

Sodinokibi (REvil) ransomware alone made minimum profits worth $123 million, as per the IBM report. Besides this, digital currency and server access attacks also affected Indian companies last year. Cyber attackers took benefit of the environments created by the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide and aimed sectors like hospitals, medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers and others as companies.

India/South Asia security software technical sales leader Sudeep Das told news agency IANS, “We also witnessed cybercriminals using relief efforts and public health information as spam lures including targeted attacks on critical components of the vaccine supply chain. These all remain issues in 2021.”

Das also told IANS, “Companies should harden their cloud environments with a zero-trust approach to their security strategy and leverage AI to monitor, detect and contextualize dynamic behaviours and movements across hybrid cloud environments, to verify the legitimacy (or lack of) of a threat and automate a response.”

Globally, Europe was the most hit continent with over 31 per cent attacks accounted for, and the majority being ransomware attacks. Europe has experienced more attacks in the year 2020 than any other region, with ransomware emerging as the top culprit. Europe also reported twice as many insider attacks as North America and Asia combined in the year 2020.

The report mentions that the data collected is “based on insights and observations from monitoring over 150 billion security events per day in more than 130 countries”.
