On Friday, the local administration of the Bhandara district declared that it is now a Covid-free district. With this declaration, Bhandara became the first district in the state to be declared so.

The declaration came after the only patient who was under treatment was discharged from the hospital and not a single new case was recorded.

Bhandara was one of the worst hit parts of the state during the second wave with more than 12,800 patients under treatment on April 18. Though the number seems small, the district has the population of less than 15 lakh people plus being a rural area, the lesser medical facilities led to a shortage of oxygen. This led to worsening the situation.

The collective efforts of the administration and cooperation of people played an important role in making Bhandara free of the disease, District collector Sandip Kadam said.
