On Friday, the Union Health Ministry had said that the severity of Covid-19 disease from the Omicron variant in India could be low due to the vaccination pace in the country.
On Thursday, two cases of the new variant have been detected in the country. The World Health Organization has designated this strain as a “variant of concern.”
Given Omicron’s characteristics, the Health Ministry has said that it is likely to spread in more countries. It said, “However, the scale and magnitude of the rise in cases and most importantly the severity of disease that will be caused is not clear.”
The ministry also said that there is no such evidence to suggest that the existing vaccines do not work on the Omicron variant.
