On Monday, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren stirred up a row when he announced free distribution of “kafans” to cover bodies of dying people due to Covid-19 infection. Soon after this decision, BJP slammed the CM and said that he should focus more on providing free medicines instead.
The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) had hit back saying that BJP has failed to pay attention to the efforts of state government in order to provide free vaccination to people.
Soren had convened a virtual meeting of his cabinet ministers in order to develop a strategy to curb the coronavirus in the state. After the meeting, he had announced his decision to provide free kafans amidst the reports that people are facing problems procuring them because of lockdown-like restrictions in the state.
BJP Jharkhand president and MP Deepak Prakash responded to Soren’s decision and said that the irony is when the Centre is leaving no stone unturned in saving the lives of citizens, the JMM-led government in Jharkhand is pushing for free distribution of shrouds to the public.
BJP spokesperson Kunal Sarangi labelled the government’s announcement as “unfortunate” and “shameful” and said that administration should have decided to distribute free ration and medicine.
Mumbai BJP spokesperson Suresh Nakhua tweeted a video which shows Soren making the announcement.

The JMM replied to the BJP’s barb, tweeting, “The Hemant Soren government is also giving free vaccines. But to you and your poor politics, what is visible is only the shroud.”
Soren retweeted JMMs post and said criticised BJP for Uttar Pradesh’s situation.
“By the way, in your Uttam Pradesh, the sight of the bodies of the poor floating on mother Ganga, the bodies of the poor buried in the sand, the bodies of the poor attacked by dogs and vultures is probably liked by you and that is why it is beyond your taste that someone gets shroud,” read the post.
In another tweet, it was alleged by JMM that BJP leaders had been caught stealing shrouds and “you have also looted the coffins of soldiers in Kargil”.
