On Wednesday, March 31, India recorded its biggest daily spike in the Covid-19 cases since early October with 72,330 fresh infections reported. After Wednesday’s record, the total number of cases was tallied to 1,22,21,665. India saw its biggest 70k ranged hike on October 11 when it recorded 74,383 infections and this is the highest since then.
The lives of 459 people were lost in the said timeframe – up from 354 on Wednesday – leading the death toll to 1,62,927, the health ministry data showed.
The Active Cases in the country stood at 5,84,055, after a jump of 31,489 in the last 24 hours.
A total of 24,47,98,621 samples have been tested for Covid-19 up to March 31 and of them, 11,25,681 samples were tested on Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.
Since a few weeks, India has been recording high number of Covid-19 cases which according to the experts, is termed as the ‘Second Wave’ of the infection. Last week, the number of daily cases were close to 60,000 that were concerning the government.
On the other hand, the recovered individuals from the deadly virus in the country has increased to 1,14,74,683 (as of Wednesday). The fatality rate in the country has further dropped to 1.33%, the data mentioned.
The 459 new fatalities include 227 from Maharashtra, 55 Punjab, 39 from Chhattisgarh, 26 from Karnataka, 19 from Tamil Nadu, 15 from Kerala and 11 each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The Health Ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
The state of Maharashtra is the biggest contributor to these numbers and hence, the state is seeing a Night Curfew from 8PM to 7AM and districts are allowed to impose a step wise lockdown if necessary.
