A semi-successful meeting, they said! The 10th meeting between the Centre and protesting farmers resulted in a breakthrough in the ongoing deadlock as the Government ‘proposed’ a 1.5 -2 years delay proposed to suspend the three contentious farm laws.
Though the farmers want a complete removal of the laws as a mere suspension of the laws for some period of time will not bring about any change, farmer leaders said on Wednesday after the 10th round of talks concluded.
Hearing the decision, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, being hopeful, said, “I am happy that farmer unions have taken our proposal seriously and said that they would consider it tomorrow and consider their decision on January 22. I feel that the talks are progressing in the right direction and there is a possibility of finding a resolution soon.” Adding that the talks were held in a cordial atmosphere Tomar said that there were a few ‘Naram-Garam’ moments too. “It will be a victory for Indian democracy the day the protest ends,” Tomar said.
“The government placed a new proposal before us in the tenth-round meeting – it is ready to set up a special committee which will consider all our demands along with the three new laws,” said Balkishan Singh Brar of the All India Kisan Sabha.
“The government also proposed that until the committee completes the review, all three new laws will be put on hold for one-and-a-half-year,” he added.
Minister of railways, Piyush Goyal and minister of state for Commerce Som Prakash, apart from agriculture minister Tomar, represented the government side.
The next meeting between the government and farmers will be held on January 22.
