On Tuesday, it was decided by the Maharashtra cabinet to withdraw Maharashtra Public Universities (third amendment) Bill, 2022. The bill was introduced by the MVA government and the state assembly had approved it.
This bill reduced the powers of the governor, thus pushing the state government to suggest names for the post of vice-chancellors. The higher and technical education minister was appointed as the pro-chancellor.
As the MVA’s amendment to the Universities Act was withdrawn, higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil said that the bill desired to bring autonomy and sanctity of the university sector to an end.
He said, “Teachers and students’ union also opposed it. Now, as we have decided to withdraw the amendment bill, the process of selection of vice-chancellor will be done in the right way and the sanctity of the Act will be maintained.”
