MUMBAI: Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey has turned his attention towards motorcyclists riding without helmets. Pandey said in his Facebook Live session on Sunday that he has instructed the traffic department to start registering FIRs and treat each of these cases as rash and negligent driving. Between March 6 and March 26, more than 53000 motorcyclists were issued challans for riding without helmets.
Commissioner observed that there were too many instances of motorcyclists riding without helmets and that they were endangering themselves. “Please do not force us to take action. We do not wish to spoil your day but you are leaving us with no choice. Watch out.. we will be on the lookout,” he warned.
Commissioner also warned of action against unnecessary honking which adds to noise pollution in the city. “Mindless honking has become a habit in Mumbai,” said the police chief, adding that he lived on the first floor of a housing society and the cacophony on the streets below made it tough to sleep whether in the day or night. “Why honk when the signal is red?,” he said. “So far, we hadn’t taken action against unnecessary honking but I have asked the traffic department to do so now.”
As far as wrong-side driving is concerned, over 2600 FIRs have been recorded till March 31 since Pandey announced the crackdown on March 6. The commissioner also announced that the police would start seizing vehicles in addition to registering FIR if violations did not reduce.
