On Thursday National Commission for Women member Chandramukhi Devi, visited the village where a 50-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and abandoned outside her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district, said the incident would not have happened had the woman not stepped out alone in the evening. The victim later died in hospital due to excessive bleeding.
“I feel had the woman not stepped out in the evening, or one of her children had accompanied her, the incident would not have occurred”, she said. “This is a crime that has shamed humanity, but I would also like to say that women should not, under the influence of anyone, step out untimely”.
On Sunday, the 50-years-old Anganwadi worker who had gone to a temple was found dead under unexplainable circumstances. Her family members have accused the temple priest and his aides of raping and murdering her.
Pointing out the lack of strictness on the part of the police department, she had also said that she was unhappy with their role in the incident, adding that if the police would have shown swiftness in the matter, perhaps they could have saved the victim.
Chandramukhi, later, withdrew her comments and said that it was taken out of context.
However, before her clarification, NCW Chief Rekha Sharma who also had to face the ire on social media said that she did not agree with the remarks of the commissions’ member.
