Key Points:
- The Uttarakhand entity of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to shut the Out-Patient Departments (OPDs) in Private Hospitals on December 11 in a protest against the Centre’s decision to allow a certain section of Ayurveda doctors to perform surgeries.
- Officials from the IMA (Uttarakhand) have alleged that the move would put at risk the lives of the patients due to the possibility of side-effects of Ayurveda and Allopathy being mixed.
- “Over 2000 doctors from Uttarakhand will keep OPDs shut from 6 am to 6 pm on December 11, protesting against the decision. The courts in the country say that those practicing modern medicine cannot practice Ayurveda, then why is it not the same vice-versa? Using Ayurvedic medicines during modern medicine treatment can become fatal for the patient, and who would be responsible then?” Dr DD Choudhury, national vice-president and state secretary of IMA said.
The Government, last month declared that the Ayurveda Doctors can perform surgeries (which they used to perform even before this was announced), just to make it legal. Since then, Indian Medical Association has been in oppose of the decision made by the Government along with Central Council of Indian Medicine.
As a result, now, The Uttarakhand entity of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to shut the Out-Patient Departments (OPDs) in Private Hospitals on December 11 in a protest against the Centre’s decision to allow a certain section of Ayurveda doctors to perform surgeries.
Officials from the IMA (Uttarakhand) have alleged that the move would put at risk the lives of the patients due to the possibility of side-effects of Ayurveda and Allopathy being mixed.
Dr DD Choudhury, national vice-president and state secretary of IMA said,
“It is not that we do not want AYUSH medicine to flourish in the country, but we are against the mixing of two different kinds of treatments.”
Adding to the statement, he said,
“Over 2000 doctors from Uttarakhand will keep OPDs shut from 6 am to 6 pm on December 11, protesting against the decision. The courts in the country say that those practicing modern medicine cannot practice Ayurveda, then why is it not the same vice-versa? Using Ayurvedic medicines during modern medicine treatment can become fatal for the patient, and who would be responsible then?”
The medical body will also hold a symbolic silent protest at different areas across the state on Tuesday in line with Covid-19 protocol.

The IMA chiefs have also been speaking up on the topic, out loud on the Social Media. Doctors have said that they aren’t against any ‘Pathy’ but, ‘Mixopathy’ is life threatening and it shouldn’t be encouraged by the Centre.
