The first transgender toilet was opened in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and was inaugurated by Varanasi’s mayor, Mridula Jaiswal on Thursday. This transgender toilet has been built by the UP government under the Smart City Project to ensure the participation of the community in the cleanliness of the city.

Part of the Smart City Project, the toilet has been constructed by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation in Kamaksha area with an aim to ensure participation of transgenders, who often face social ostracism in public, in the cleanliness drive under Swachh Bharat Mission.

“Transgenders in the city had no washroom facility in the public. It will go a long way in addressing their problem,” said Jaiswal.

Gaurang Rathi, the Municipal Commissioner said that the corporation will build four more such toilets in different areas in next two-three months to sort out difficulties faced by transgenders in urinating in the public.After Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh government has directed all municipal corporations to construct such facilities for transgenders within their municipal limits.

The municipal commissioner of Varanasi, Gaurang Rathi said: “These toilets are only for third genders and not for the others. This was a long-awaited demand as they have faced a lot of difficulties. We plan to build four more of them in the upcoming two to three months.”

“This has been done in order to promote all kinds of inclusivity in the Prime Minister’s constituency,” he added.

Transgender toilets will help the community considerably, said Roshni, “We appreciate the step taken by the local body administration as it is good for us. We had faced a lot of difficulties but now we are happy.”
