On Tuesday, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said that from this academic year of 2022-23, students will be allowed to pursue two degrees simultaneously. It has been a long time since this move was planned by the UGC and it received a nod for the same in 2020.

The students will now be able to pursue two undergraduate degrees, two postgraduate degrees, or two diploma degrees. The UGC Chairman said that both degrees can be pursued in online, physical classroom mode, one online and offline or both in online mode.

However, the degrees will only be the non-technical programmes which have been given a nod by the UGC. Students can pursue two degrees which can be a combination of subjects from streams like humanities, commerce and science. Students will be granted admission based on the eligibility and also program availability.

For now, the commission is refraining from having a combination of technical and non-technical programmes as it will be difficult, explained the chairman.

The guidelines for the same will be released by the UGC today and will be made available to the institutions as well as the statutory bodies.
