On Tuesday, a five-judge bench was led by CJI U.U Lalit who reserved the petitions challenging the 103rd Constitutional Amendment. This amendment provides a 10% reservation for government jobs and educational institutions to the citizens from EWS.
It was a 7 day-long hearing on a group of petitions that were filed by NGO ‘Janhit Abhiyan’ and others.
The Centre had informed that in order to make sure that the 10% EWS quota does not get into the seats of the SC ST OBC and general category, all central educational institutions were directed to increase the intake of seats by 25%. 2.14 lakhs more seats have been approved at a price of Rs.4,315.15 crore.
