On Monday, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa announced his resignation from the office. He tweeted “Effective immediately, I have tendered my resignation as Prime Minister to the President.”
This big decision came on a day when the supporters of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa – who is the younger brother of Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked the anti-government demonstrators in Colombo which left nearly 78 people injured.
Shortly after the violence, Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted “While emotions are running high in #Ika, I urge our general public to exercise restraint and remember that violence only begets violence. The economic crisis we’re in needs an economic solution which this administration is committed to resolving.”
