“SAD DAY for Democracy” – CM Kejriwal over NCT Bill passed in Rajya Sabha

After the Lower House – Lok Sabha passed the National Capital Territory (NCT) Bill, 2021, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed it as an ‘insult’ to Delhi citizens. 

Soon within the next few days the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed in Rajya Sabha and CM Kejriwal entitled it as a “SAD DAY” for the democracy. 

The Delhi CM also said that his struggle to restore power back to the people would go on. In a tweet, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief said that the party would continue doing their “GOOD WORK” and continue their struggle to restore power to the people.

“Rajya Sabha passes GNCTD amendment Bill. Sad day for Indian democracy. We will continue our struggle to restore power back to people. Whatever be the obstacles, we will continue doing good work. Work will neither stop nor slow down,” he tweeted.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia called it a “dark day” for democracy.

“It is a black day for Indian democracy. The rights of the government elected by the people of Delhi have been snatched away and put in the hands of the lieutenant governor. Look at the irony – Parliament, which is the temple of democracy, was chosen for the murder of democracy. The people of Delhi will fight against this dictatorship,” Sisodia said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Aam Aadmi Party said that it may move to the Supreme Court against the NCT Bill as the constitutional experts and senior government officials said the bill will impact day-to-day governance in the city and functioning of the Delhi assembly.

It was on Wednesday that the Rajya Sabha approved the bill giving rights to Delhi”s Lieutenant Governor (L-G) over the elected government after high drama in the House that saw oppose by the opposition and a walkout by MPs of parties like the BJD, SP, Congress and the YSR-Congress.

The bill says that the “government” referred to in any law made by the Delhi legislative assembly will imply Lieutenant Governor, was passed earlier in Parliament after it was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

The passing of the bill in the Upper House was met with a walk-out by opposition parties including Congress and the AAP, who strongly opposed the bill. 

“The Bill is neither aimed at taking away the powers of the elected government of Delhi nor give additional powers to the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital,”  Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said replying on the passed bill.
