On Tuesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) gave approval for the guidelines for research internships for students to pursue at an undergraduate level.

Especially for the four year undergraduate programmes as well as for graduation in all programmes – internships have been made mandatory by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As the students are required to do internships, the time span of the internship will depend on the course of the student.

The guidelines say that “The internships of 8-10 weeks of 10 credits, after 2nd or 4th semester, will be mandatory for the students desirous of exiting with a certificate or diploma, respectively.”

The guidelines read “Research internship experience can be gained by working with faculty/scientists in education institutes, research institutions, industrial research labs, nationally reputed organizations and individual persons distinguished in specific fields.”

As per the guidelines, the ‘research internship’ is meant to enhance the employability of an individual student and also to develop research aptitude of an individual student.
