The Covid-19 pandemic has been the culprit of a lot of delays in the country. Delay in the Education system, delay in the Judiciary system and now, even Governing system.
On Monday, the Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif said that the local bodies in Maharashtra will be postponed due to the pandemic.
Minister Hassan Mushriff said that the local bodies elections will not take place until 70% of the state population is vaccinated against the virus.
“The elections to the local bodies are a mammoth exercise. And unless we have 70 per cent of people vaccinated, it would put them to risk,” he said.
The Zila Parishads, Gram Panchayats and Municipal Corporation elections were schedule between the months of November 2021 to February 2022. The elections are scheduled in different phases.
Though the polls were pre decided, the second wave of Covid-19 wasn’t! And hence, due to the extreme situations in the state due to the coronavirus wave, the state government is not really focusing on the local body polls currently.
According to the health ministry data currently 2.76 crore people in the state have been inoculated. The total population of Maharashtra is pegged at 11.4 crore according to the 2011 Census.
The local body polls have been in a lot of trouble lately. Maharashtra Social Welfare Minister Vijay Wadettiwar urged Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to postpone all local self-government body polls due in the next few months in the state unless the issue of OBC reservation is resolved.
