On Thursday, the Supreme Court permitted the resumption of bullock cart races in the state after a pause of 4 years at par with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, wherein their amendments are pending before the Constitution Bench of the top court since 2018.
Across the country, Jallikattu bull races and bullock cart races were banned by the apex court in 2014. It said that these practices violated the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. However, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had amended the act so as to allow regulated bull races and Jallikattu.
The bench was headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar and was hearing a petition filed by the government of Maharashtra challenging the 2018 order of Bombay HC that had stayed bullock cart races in the state.
