India saw the highest number of births on New Year’s Day 2021 across the globe with 67,385 babies born on January 1; China ranks number two with (46,299) followed by Nigeria (26,039), Pakistan (16,787), Indonesia (13,020) and the United States of America (10,452) among others.
An estimated 371,504 babies are said were born on the first day of the Calendar New Year 2021, according to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). With the beginning of the New Year, UNICEF was celebrating new lives that came into the world on January 1. Fiji in the Pacific welcomed the first baby of 2021 and the United States the last.
Globally, over half of these births took place in 10 countries. With an approximate total of 140 million kids born, the life expectancy is said to be 84 years.
UNICEF’s Executive Director Henrietta Fore said, “The children born on 1st of January enter a world far different than even a year ago, and a New Year brings a new opportunity to reimagine it.” She added, “Children born on January 1 will inherit the world we begin to build for them—today. Let us make 2021 the year we start to build a fairer, safer, healthier world for children,” Fore added.
2021 is also the 75th anniversary of UNICEF. UNICEF and its partners will be honoring the anniversary with events and announcements celebrating three-quarters of a century of protecting children from conflict, disease and exclusion and championing their right to survival, health and education.
The life expectancy of the babies born in India in 2021 will be 80.9 years which is 3 years less than the global average, UNICEF reported. However, a million newborns with special needs survive each year because of the 320 district level Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) set up by the government between 2014 and 2020.
67,385 babies were born in India on January 1 which is the highest number of babies born on New Year’s Eve.
