MUMBAI: Education department said junior colleges can begin the academic year for class XI students as soon as they fill up 75% seats. With Covid-19, junior colleges were seeking clarity from government before starting online classes.

While the rulebook allows junior colleges to start classes when they fill up 75% seats, college heads were unsure about directives this year.

“We fill up our 75% seats in the first merit list but wait for another list if students want to change the college. This year, we decided to wait until the government go-ahead,” said the head of junior college.

Usually, education department announces it after the second or third round of admissions, allowing junior colleges to start the academic year.

Teachers said they had yet not started online sessions as  government too was conducting classes. State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is hosting online sessions for class XI students in Maharashtra and most junior colleges have recommended that students attend these classes.

School education secretary Vandana Krishna said, “Junior colleges can start whenever they are ready. There is no need to wait for government directions.”
