On Friday with top companies such as Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp agreeing to appoint statutory officers in line with the guidelines.

Social media giants Facebook, Google and WhatsApp have finally agreed to comply with the Indian government’s new IT rules.

According to a report, all three along with Koo, Sharchat, Telegram and LinkedIn have submitted names of these nodal officers to the concerned authority, but Twitter hasn’t yet sent details.

On Friday saw a change as majority of companies came forward and expressed willingness to start complying with a section of the provisions. LinkedIn, Google, Facebook and WhatsApp shared details of their chief compliance officer, nodal contact person and grievance officer with the IT ministry.

To recall, the government on February 25 had asked all major social media platforms to comply with the new social rules until May 26. In the last couple of days, there was a bit of tussle between these social media companies and the authorities. WhatsApp initially moved to the court stating that its current method of functioning is in line with Indian law as it allows “government officials, law enforcement, journalists, members of ethnic or religious groups, scholars, teachers, students” to exercise their “right to freedom of speech and expression without fear of retaliation.”

The government on Thursday sent a response asking social media giant to “stop beating around the bush and comply with laws of the land.”
