On Thursday, the SC questioned the method that was adopted by the Union Government to fix ₹8 lakh as the annual income limit in order to identify the economically weaker section (EWS) quota for giving out 10% quota in educational institutions as well as public jobs.
It was on 2019 when the 10% EWS quota was introduced under the 103rd Constitution (amendment) Act.
The act has not been stayed which is why the government has issued a notification on July 29 that introduced 10% EWS quota along with 27% quota for other backward classes (OBC) within the All-India Quota (AIQ) seats for the postgraduate medical courses from this academic year.
