Considering her socio economic status, the Bombay high court allowed an 18-year-old’s plea for medical termination of her 26 weeks pregnancy. In the facts and situation, compelling the petitioner, a girl of tender age, to have an unwanted child may lead to devastating consequences for the rest of her life not only for the petitioner but for the entire family, said a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Madhav Jamdar on October 6. The girl said the continuation of the pregnancy will unfavorably affect her mental health. But a JJ Hospital panel said the foetus has no abnormality nor does she have any medical or pregnancy-related disease. The mother has common depressive incident and with treatment, the further continuation of pregnancy is unlikely to affect her mental health.
