Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a mass drive of penalizing almost 20K citizens everyday who are not seen wearing masks. On day 1 of BMC’s drive to fine those citizens daily, over 4,369 citizens were penalized Rs 8.73 lakh, according to BMC data. Overall, BMC has collected over Rs 1.05 crore from 38,866 violators since April.

Mumbai is seeing over 2,000 covid cases daily and hence BMC announced this drive on Monday as a step to curb the virus.

Nevertheless, on Monday, not even 50% of the target could be met. A BMC official told Hindustan Times, “The Power cut in the city was an obstacle for the administration on Monday. Local trains were shut for a while and hence, travel became difficult. But, Tuesday onwards, we plan to meet the decided target.”

The commissioner has given a month’s target and has said that he’ll monitor it himself. Currently, 950 people are caught daily without masks in Mumbai (Mumbai).

Previously, the penalty for not wearing masks in public places was Rs. 1,000. The fine has been reduced to Rs.200 because the drive is not for collecting fines but installing fear in the minds of people about contacting the virus if they do not abide by the SOP’s made for them.

From April 9 to September 12, 4900 people were caught in the act and were fined over 33.5 lakh.

Mumbai reported 1,620 new Coronavirus cases tallying it to 2,31,070. With 36 fresh deaths, the death toll rose to 9,466. Mumbai;s recovery rate is 84 % with currently, 22,693 active cases, as of Tuesday’s data.
