A fine of Rs. 10,000 will be imposed on the ones drinking on Goa beaches, decided the Goa tourism department. This move came after several areas in Goa were found littered with bottles post the New Year Celebrations.
The signboards installed during this move clearly states that a visitor will be fined Rs.2000 if caught in such behaviour and a group of people will be slapped with a fine of Rs.10,000. This decision came in light when several popular beaches of Goa were found littered with alcohol bottles and other waste post the New Year Celebrations. As per the reports, some visitors have also sustained injuries after accidentally stepping on broken glass bottles that have been carelessly lying on beaches.Some tourists have also reported foot injuries after accidently stepping on broken glass shards.
Goa Tourism director Menino D’Souza said that boards have been installed to warn people against drinking on beaches. D’Souza added, “The tourism department will enforce the amended Act through police. Once we have our Tourist Police Force, we will be able to do it on our own.”
D’Souza also told added that, “The notifications were issued two years ago and the responsibility for enforcing this is with the police. They are a government body and can issue challans. No one else can. A proposal is in place to set up a force for the tourism industry. It will happen, of that there is no doubt.”
