On Thursday, the Assam Assembly passed an amendment to the Assam Cattle Preservation Act empowering the police to enter the house of an accused and inspect, to search, and seize the properties acquired in the past 6 years with money being reportedly earned from the illegal cattle trade.
In the assembly, amid the heated debate, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa said that he wants to convey the message that Assam is a ‘tough state’ while it is dealing with unlawful cattle trade.
The assembly had also passed the Assam cattle Preservation Bill on August 13, thus, banning slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs are in a majority within a radius of 5 kilometers of a temple or any other institution.
