The Twitter handle of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website was hacked on Thursday morning. And, just like with former US President Barack Obama, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and others whos accounts were hacked in July, the hacker behind PM Modi’s account was asking users to donate cryptocurrency — this time under the guise donating to the PM’s National Relief Fund.
According to reports, the hacker put out messages seeking donations to the Prime Minister’s relief fund for COVID-19 using bitcoins.
However, tweets have now been removed from the social networking platform.
Twitter, in an email to news agency Reuters, stated that it is taking “steps to secure the compromised account” and is “actively investigating” the situation.
“We’re aware of this activity and have taken steps to secure the compromised account. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted,” a Twitter spokesperson added.
On August 30, cybersecurity firm Cyble had claimed that hacker group John Wick was behind a data breach at Paytm Mall, the e-commerce unit of Paytm.
Twitter however confirmed that at this point they have no evidence of any correlation between this account compromise and the incident that took place in July.
